Update to version 15.0

These steps are required to update an existing G DATA installation to version 15.0. The following instructions are designed for systems or system environments where G DATA software version 12.x, 13.x or 14.x was previously used.

1. Preparation

It is recommended that a database backup be made before the update process is performed in the unlikely event of data loss.

Exit the G DATA Administrator or the G DATA Management Server
go to the folder path on the local hard disk: C:\Programs (x86)\G DATA\G DATA AntiVirus ManagementServer
(warning) (The path may differ if a different installation location is selected)
there start the application "GData.Business.Server.Config.exe".

After the application has been started, click the Create backup option in the window that appears. Here you will be offered more detailed settings on how to perform the backup. In this area you can also select an internal or external storage location of your choice where the backup is to be saved.

The programme update can be distributed to the G DATA Security Client either manually or automatically by means of "Staged distribution". The "Staged distribution" function is used for automatic distribution.

Settings for staged distribution can be configured in the G DATA Administrator under the following path:

G DATA Administrator > ManagementServer > Updates > Staged distribution

If you do not want to use the staged distribution, it is possible to deactivate the option for automatic programme update within the G DATA Administrator and then distribute it individually or in groups via the context menu.

To do this, select the desired client or client group. Right-click to open the menu. Click on Update program files automatically files to remove the check mark and thus deactivate the automatic programme updates.

2. Update

Two methods are offered for updating the existing G DATA program version:

Online update via the Internet update application
Update using Setup.exe

2.1 Internet update

Before running the Internet update program, please make sure that the G DATA Administrator has been closed. If this has been done, please run the "Internet update" application of the G DATA Management Server. The application can be found at:

C:\Program Files (x86)\G Data\G DATA AntiVirus ManagementServer\IUpdate.exe
(warning) (The path may differ if a different installation location is selected)

Alternatively, the application can also be run using the search function of the Windows desktop.

After the application has started, click Update program files (server). This function will download and install the updated components for the G DATA ManagementServer. At the same time, the local database (if available) and SQL database used by the G DATA ManagementServer will also be updated.

After the update has been successfully downloaded, please click on Update program files (client) to also obtain the latest components for the G DATA Exchange Mail Security.

After the components have been downloaded to the management server via IUpdate.exe, they are distributed according to the settings in the G DATA Administrator. This is done via the Mailsecurity for Exchange Client, via the client settings or manually for selected clients.

Distribution via the Mailsecurity for Exchange Client:

Clients > In the network tree, select Exchange in the desired group > Exchange settings > General

Update programme files automatically check or uncheck the box as required.

Via the staged distribution of the clients:

Clients > Select the desired client group in the network tree > Client settings > General

Update programme files automatically check or uncheck the box as required.

Manual for selected clients:

Clients > Clients > Overview > search/filter desired Clients in the list > right click on the Clients > Update program files now

2.2 Installation file

Unpack the ZIP archive, which you can download from our website, and open the file "Setup.exe".

In the following dialogue please click on "Easy updates" and follow the further instructions of the update assistant.

Read and confirm the license agreement before clicking Next.

The update process will now continue. As soon as it has been successfully completed, please click on Quit.

3. Practical tips

To make the distribution of programme updates to the latest version as simple and fast as possible, we recommend that you first install the update on a group of test clients. If problems occur or error messages are displayed, these can be resolved first without affecting production systems or environments and without causing any downtime. This test group should represent the most common systems within your local configuration in order to provide a realistic simulation of the production system or environment. In addition, a corresponding test phase should be set up over several days if delayed effects or errors occur. If no serious errors occur after the test phase, you can distribute the program update to version 15.0 to the rest of your network.
